all our love this holiday season
how is 2021 already over?????
After a wild 2020, we expected more adventure and unpredictability in 2021, but the most surprising thing about this year was pretty much that we blinked and the whole thing was nearly over. In immediate retrospect, it felt like a very one-day-at-a-time situation, always trying to do the next right thing. And while being focused and head-down in every moment and every day, those moments turned into weeks and months and suddenly here we are.
Here’s where 2021 got us in the Hunt Homan household:
We opened a new brick and mortar shop in the Benson neighborhood of Omaha (check the Instagram for hours)
We hosted four pop-up maker markets at the shop to support other local artisans and small business owners
We launched a house olive oil brand
We adopted a perfect frenchie pom named Cricket
Mom got two doses and a boost
Ash got two doses too!
Ash started 6th grade at a new (and much bigger) school, Lewis and Clark Middle School
Meg passed her priority bill to allow people who have to leave work to care for a sick family member to file for unemployment insurance payments
We went to five national parks, all of which deserve bullet points of their own. Death Valley, Mesa Verde, Volcanoes, Arches, and Canyonlands.
Meg launched her re-election campaign for the State Legislature
Two of our 4+ year-old orchids bloomed again. We are obsessed with keeping orchids alive.
We took a nap on a cliff
Meg hosted the band Dirt House in her office to record a live session
Meg received a 20 under 40 Leadership Award from the Council of State Governments, the nation’s largest nonpartisan organization serving all three branches of state elected and appointed officials. (I could not make it to the ceremony in Santa Fe because I was speaking at a conference in DC! And let me tell you, that’s a problem I thought I’d never have.)
Meg met with the men in Nebraska serving life in prison to discuss justice reform and the current state of our prisons, for new bills to be introduced in January
Ash had their first cello concert and started learning double bass
Meg did an 11-mile hike which almost killed her. But she did it!!!!
And, she swam out in extremely dangerous water with all of her possessions wrapped in trash bags to board a boat to take her back to the trailhead because she is out of her mind. (It was totally illegal but I think the walk back would have sent me to the next plane.)
Meg took the kids to a backyard dance party
Meg was featured in Design*Sponge founder Grace Bonney’s new book, Collective Wisdom. Grace interviewed our friend Senator Patty Pansing Brooks and Meg together for this book about intergenerational friendships.
We had a glorious picnic in the yard in front of the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City
Meg was selected to exhibit two of her weavings in the annual Bemis Art Auction which was a total bucket list moment
Meg launched a merch campaign to raise money for Nebraskans for Medicinal Marijuana
Celebrated four years with Danny, who you may not know Meg is dating
Meg kayaked in Lake Tahoe
Meg slept in a lava field
Meg was the co-grand marshall of Omaha’s pride parade with her friend Dominique Morgan
Meg spoke up for comprehensive sex education at a State Board of Education meeting and got fully boo’d. (But! I was right!!!!!!!)
Meg tried rice for the first time (long story) (this is a huge deal)
We drove down the Pacific Coast Highway together and did Thanksgiving in Pasadena with Danny’s family
Meg bought a Vespa, dropped it twice so far
Ash learned how to crochet and is extremely, shockingly good at it
More things that we are very proud of are coming in 2022--early in the year, too. This year put so many things into motion. Looking back is done. Forward, now!
